Uncle Dick Davis Campground, Butte La Rose, LA. We stumbled upon this park years ago as we explored the Atchafalaya Basin in St. Martin Parish, LA. Located several miles from the Louisiana Welcome Center exit off I10 down Atchafalaya River Hwy., then onto Herman Dupuis Road is this rural, laid-back Parish owned campground. NOTE: do not follow your GPS and avoid directions using Henderson Levee Road to Herman Dupuis Road as you will encounter the old rickety Butte La Rose Pontoon Bridge which is not passable except by passenger car(when not flooded).
The campground area is colonized with fishing camps and has its own bath house (unfortunately in poor condition as it is unlocked and subject use and abuse by anyone), a boat ramp, 17 paved campsites with electric (one of which has 50 amp service, all the others 30 amp), water, sewer and fire rings-go figure, what a find. The campground is sandwiched between Bayou La Rose and Herman Dupuis Road. Although close to the road there is no traffic and this is a tranquil and quiet campground-just serene.
And there is much to do in the area. As previously mentioned the campground is located on the western edge of the Atchafalaya Basin in St. Martin Parish which has events occurring throughout the year. Just down the road, Henderson, a rural farming community, offers swamp tours, the marketshops, and crawfish…and more crawfish, restaurants, a prehistoric park, and the best fresh water fishing in the south.
There is no WiFi and our Pixel phones were not usable as hotspots being just beyond the range of available broadband back in Henderson. Likewise OTA (over the air antenna) faired only a bit better receiving one station from New Iberia in SD. The FHU was standard located in a large cement square. As this is first-come-first-in we could not access the 50 amp site, however the 30 amp (we have a convertor to plug our 50 amp into) was stable and powered the refrigerator, charger/inverter and one air conditioner.
The Takeaway: Uncle Dick Davis Campground offers an authentic Cajun backcountry experience mixing with the locals. A boat launch on the Bayou La Rose with parking for truck and boat trailer, a bathhouse, albeit needing updating and cleaning, and FHU (30 amp) make this a campground to frequent for relaxation and repose. Conveniently located a short distance from the Louisiana Welcome Center exit off I10. No Cell/Internet and one channel OTA, however that is not the intent of coming here. All sites are now 50/30 amp
